It is clear that Giovanni had a connection with Ash's mother. He must have married Ash's mother, got her pregnant, and then left her because of arguments about how to raise Ash. Giovanni wants money, power and immortality. However, Ash and his mom focused on raising pokemon, befriending them, protecting their world, and letting ash go off on his own at age 10!
